Micro Business:  Common Problems

Issues facing Micro businesses vary drastically depending on the industry, the product or service and the financial situation.

Great product knowledge and team, but limited business knowledge
Many micro businesses provide a unique product or service.  Typically the founder and their small team knows everything about the product or service, but do not have a savvy business background. They often know what needs to be done, but struggle with knowing the best way!  Or in some cases just struggle with the business confidence to make the decision.

Can't keep up with customer demand
Micro businesses are typically limited on resources and assets required to produce their service or product.  Fluctuations in demand sometimes make it difficult to keep up with the demand of the customer base.  This seems like a "good" problem, but can easily but a small start up out of business!

Difficult Client Requirements
Landing a new client is always exciting from a commercial perspective, but some clients have strict requirements to be a supplier.  The requirements are handed down from their procurement specialist and they just expect you to fulfil the expectations, often with no guidance or support.

Making business decision with little or no business intelligence information
Most business professionals know that information and data is required for most important business decisions.  The problem for many micro businesses is that they don't have a system that allows them to easily calculate performance indicators.  This makes it very difficult to identify the true profitability  and areas that required improvement.  This causes many leaders to make decisions based on feeling instead of fact!

Requirement of additional investments
Many micro businesses begin their business with investments and sweat equity from friends and family.  This type of investment is often given on trust and faith, the same is NOT true we pursuing additional business investors. They need you to PROVE that you have a great business idea with an implementable and profitable plan!

Are any of these making you lose sleep at night? Do you need a little extra guidance to help you overcome hurdles along the way?

Micro Business:  Implemented Solutions

At GDC we have decades of experience assisting Micro Businesses. Below are some examples of our implemented solutions for past clients.

Food Manufacturing
Collards Greens have always been a tasty treat and a staple in Southern cooking. The problem is they are not typically healthy, but a local couple had a fantastic recipe that is both delicious and healthy!

The couple had been providing the delicious treat at local festivals, and would sell out at each event. The couple saw an opportunity with the health food market growing very quickly, but they didn't have the business knowledge to expand the operations.

GDC assisted in creating a robust business plan to present to investors and also assisted in setting up a facility that allowed them to produce in larger quantities. The couple was able to increase their production drastically and was able to get their product into multiple local health food stores!

Popcorn Retail Shop
Delicious treats are something that attract people from all demographics. The business was ran by a stay at home mom who had a great vision and had create a line of uniquely flavored popcorn that would make anyone's mouth water!

Her struggles began when she started approaching investors for additional capital. Her friends and family invested because they knew the product was great and she was committed to making the new business a success! Unfortunately this is NOT enough for investors, they were looking for a robust business plan to ensure that they were making a sound investment.

GDC worked with the founder to establish a strong business plan and supporting documentation that allowed her to present their vision to the investors and secure the financing required!
